Adult Bedwetting Could Be Caused By A More Dangerous Condition

by Pat Miller

When we think of people wetting the bed we usually visualize small children learning to use the bathroom or much older people who are unable to control themselves. There are, however, a good number of otherwise healthy adults who suffer with this condition.

People who suffer from nocturnal enuresis, or adult bed wetting, are often too ashamed to even tell their doctor about this problem. Unfortunately, these people could be helped if only they spoke to a medical professional.

Both adult men and women can suffer from uncontrollable bed wetting and it's often a confusing and painful ailment to admit to a doctor. Adults who wet the bed may be awaken by their condition or sleep through it entirely and only learn of their problems when they awaken.

There are two distinct types of adult bed wetters. They are loosely broken into people who have wet their beds all their lives and people who have only started wetting their beds after a long period (years) of dryness.

PNE (primary nocturnal enuresis) sufferers are people who have had bed wetting issues throughout most of their life. These periods of bed wetting may vary from frequent to infrequent but have plagued the person over a number of years beyond early childhood. Primary nocturnal enuresis often, but not always, leads the individual to suffer from psychological and self-esteem issues if not treated by a medical professional. Sometimes physical ailments are the root cause for bed wetting in adults who have been doing it all their lives.

Adult onset enuresis, or secondary nocturnal enuresis, is a type of bed wetting which adults are said to suffer from when they develop their habits later in life and have not spent their entire lives suffering.

Many times adults who begin wetting the bed after a period of dryness contribute to their own problems. Excessive drinking, caffeine or even drug use could all lead to adult bed wetting. Anxiety can also lead to occasional bed wetting amongst adults who don't normally have a problem sleeping and staying dry through the night.

Depending on the cause, there are many different treatments available. A qualified medical professional or urologist should be able to help you determine the causes of your bed wetting issues. The treatment is almost always determined by the cause and the solution could be as easy as some simple behavior modifications and exercises or you may need special medication or even surgery in rare cases.

Some reports estimate that 2% - 3% of all adults suffer from nocturnal enuresis at some point. The good news is that there is lots of help for adults who wet the bed and visiting a doctor is a good first step.
