Adults Bed Wetting – The Secret Shame

by Pat Miller

Though it's often under reported, many adults wet their bed unintentionally throughout their lives and are too scared or ashamed to even tell their doctors. Bed wetting, usually associated with children, could be a sign of a more serious condition in adults.

People who suffer from nocturnal enuresis, or adult bed wetting, are often too ashamed to even tell their doctor about this problem. Unfortunately, these people could be helped if only they spoke to a medical professional.

Both adult men and women can suffer from uncontrollable bed wetting and it's often a confusing and painful ailment to admit to a doctor. Adults who wet the bed may be awaken by their condition or sleep through it entirely and only learn of their problems when they awaken.

Adults who suffer from bed wetting issues are usually said to suffer from one of two different types of adult bed wetting. Some adults suffer from nocturnal enuresis their entire lives, while some only suffer at certain times or after engaging in certain behaviors.

PNE (primary nocturnal enuresis) sufferers are people who have had bed wetting issues throughout most of their life. These periods of bed wetting may vary from frequent to infrequent but have plagued the person over a number of years beyond early childhood. Primary nocturnal enuresis often, but not always, leads the individual to suffer from psychological and self-esteem issues if not treated by a medical professional. Sometimes physical ailments are the root cause for bed wetting in adults who have been doing it all their lives.

SNE (secondary nocturnal enuresis) is defined as bed wetting which begins as teen or adult often years of not having any such bed wetting problems. Secondary nocturnal enuresis is sometimes referred to as adult onset enuresis.

There are lots of different causes of adult bed wetting, and a qualified doctor is probably your best option. Certain drugs, internal injuries, emotional stress and even bladder cancer can all cause an otherwise healthy adult to wet the bed.

Depending on the cause, there are many different treatments available. A qualified medical professional or urologist should be able to help you determine the causes of your bed wetting issues. The treatment is almost always determined by the cause and the solution could be as easy as some simple behavior modifications and exercises or you may need special medication or even surgery in rare cases.

Some reports estimate that 2% - 3% of all adults suffer from nocturnal enuresis at some point. The good news is that there is lots of help for adults who wet the bed and visiting a doctor is a good first step.
