How In The World Do You Choose Omega 3 Supplements?

It's confusing isn't it. DHA, EPA and more. How do you choose your Omega 3 supplements?

You know what it's like. The more you read the worse it gets. You start learning about EPA and DHA, and long chain and short chain omega 3 fats. About ALA and converting ALA to DHA.

One of the people who read my site recently asked me how to go about choosing his Omega 3 capsules because he had got confused about long and short chain fats.

I can understand how he got confused, so here's a little more about it and some ideas on how to choose the best Omega 3 fish oil supplements.

There's the 3 main Omega 3 fats, DHA, EPA and ALA. They are all good for you but the most important by far is DHA.

You get ALA from plant sources like flax seeds, and your DHA comes from sources like deep sea fish. And DHA is a long chain fatty acid, whilst ALA is a short chain fatty acid. But the most important is DHA.

The most important Omega 3 fat that you need is DHA and that comes from fish oil capsules, along with EPA. No need for flax seed capsules.

Every brand of fish oil capsules has DHA.

So if you're better using fish oil supplements are they all the same? If not how do you choose between the different fish oil supplements?

Theres 2 things you need to look for to find the best rated Omega 3 fish oil capsules. You need to look for the quantity of DHA in the capsules, and the purity of the oil.

You can't decide which are the best value fish oil tablets without knowing how much DHA you get from them.

Supplements with a third of the amount of DHA than other supplements are not good value even if they are half the price, because on a price/DHA quantity comparison they are actually more expensive.

And you also need to consider the purity of the supplements because many fish oil capsules can contain oils contaminated with small amounts of mercury, for example, because many of our deep sea fish are contaminated, and that's where the oil comes from.

That's the process of choosing your Omega 3 supplements. There's only 2 things to consider, so forget long and short chain fats and so on.

That though, isn't easy to do. Actually making that comparison isn't as simple as you may imagine. The good news though is that I've done some serous comparisons and one brand comes up as the best value on DHA quantity and the same brand comes up as the best on purity as well.
