If you ever conduct a survey on the topic: "What wakes you up in the morning? What boosts your energy level and makes you feel fresh and activated?" ...You will no doubt get this answer: Coffee or tea, both of which have a high level of caffeine, the coffee having a larger amount.

Coffee beans, kola nuts and tea leaves are the components from which caffeine is obtained. Chocolate factories and pharmaceutical companies use caffeine in their products. People start craving for caffeine as it is addictive.

Caffeine addiction is one of the biggest problems in the world today, but people will never admit that they are facing this problem. Caffeine is widely popular because it helps to keep the body more alert, it increases the heart rate of the body, and it also increases the sugar level in the blood.

Caffeine has innumerable harmful consequences. It decreases the body water level and causes the body to frequently urinate as it is a diuretic. Caffeine intake diminishes the deep sleep period. A person gets obsessed with caffeine and tends to show negative behavior such as annoyance, headaches, short concentration span and joint aches.

Caffeine should be avoided by pregnant women as it is known to have negative effects on the unborn child. Caffeine can enter the placenta and the fetus can be negatively affected by its strong effect and it can increase the risk of miscarriage. Caffeine is associated with lower birth weight of the infant and increased pain during labor. Pregnant women should cut out caffeine in their diet totally or confer with their doctor for more consultation.

Three to four cups of coffee daily increases the level of anxiety in a person and makes him more prone to panic disorders. Many people also experience insomnia due to over stimulation of the body because of caffeine. People working the night shift suffer from insomnia as they are unable to sleep in the day. Lack of sleep will cause dark circles in the eyes, nervousness and jittering.

People also acquire cardiac problems and diabetes because of the rise in the heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar level. Moreover those suffering from gastric problems and stomach acidity should guard themselves and take caution with caffeine as it also causes stomach aches and increases the bowel movements. Bowel disorders are a very common side effect of caffeine.

Surprisingly, caffeine is also related to food cravings and ultimately weight gain. Caffeine's disadvantages definitely rein over its advantages. Consuming coffee may make a person more energized but that effect only lasts for four to six hours. After that the body system craves more of the instant energy which leads to increased addiction. A person should start withdrawing from caffeine independence for quality and a freer life. It is no easy feat but nothing is impossible. Only you hold the key to your life.
