Is It A Good Idea To Eat Foods Containing Omega 3 Fatty Acids?
By now we all know, or should know, that Omega 3 fats found in fish oil are very good for your health. But should you eat the foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids that you are now starting to see on the shelves?
There are 2 forms of Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats, plant based and marine based, mainly from fish oil. It is known that the marine form, being DHA and EPA, is better for your health.
And as a result of the new research food companies are now starting to manufacture foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids. But should you be eating them?
The short answer is that it's fine to eat foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids, usually added by using fish oil with DHA and EPA in it. This is good for you.
So no, there's no reason why you should avoid foods containing Omega 3. But that isn't the end of the answer.
As the demand for Omega 3 rich foods increases the manufacturers have seen an opportunity to make a killing and are charging more, often lots more, for these foods high in Omega 3.
So you also have to ask yourself how much good Omega 3 fats you're actually getting in these Omega 3 rich foods, and also how much it's costing you.
One serving of Omega 3 rich bread will give you somewhere around 120 mg of Omega 3 fats, good for you but not as good for you as the 3000 mg of good fats you get from a serving of oily fish. And it's probably pretty expensive bread.
And eating fish isn't cheap either, not to forget that it's probably got some levels of PCBs and possibly mercury too.
The simplest and most cost effective way to increase the amount of Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats in your diet is to take fish oil supplements. They are clean and you can take them easily each day.
So whilst there's no known issues from eating foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids it's not a cost effective way to increase your intake of DHA and EPA.
