Skip the Gym – Try Something New

Eating right is only one aspect of a healthy lifestyle, however, today, health experts agree that living the optimal healthy life involves a quality workout in addition to a proper diet. There are a variety of different exercise options available out there to supplement your diet, and traditionally many people engage in aerobic exercise and strength training. On the other hand, there are alternative workouts available out there that many people enjoy today including barre workouts, Yamuna body rolling, yoga, pilates, and tai chi. And, many people today consider these exercises to be gentler on the body while still effective in promoting good health.

The traditional workouts are often hard on a person's body, especially as we get older. For example, aerobic exercise can be difficult on our bones and joints because it can cause stress to your body. Also, strength training is often easier for those who are younger and it gets more difficult as you age. Lastly, many of the traditional workouts are not as healing for our bodies, and although they may be healthy, they can induce injury.

While traditional exercise forms are still a great way to stay in shape and stay healthy, some of the nontraditional fitness activities available today are more low impact. Interestingly, they do not cause as much stress to the body as normal workouts might; in fact, many of them tend to be relatively healing and some even reduce stress. Currently, the most popular options available to participate in seem to be barre workouts, Yamuna body rolling, yoga, and pilates.

The barre workouts are probably the least familiar of the exercises listed above, however, they are great workouts if you want to condition your muscles. Although the exercises are performed using a bar and mirror much like a ballerina, any person of any age or fitness level can complete the exercises. In fact, there are many studios offering classes across the country where people can attend and improve their strength without having to use weights. Many people today testify in favor of the barre workouts saying they are extremely effective.

If the barre workout is not your style, you might be interested in Yamuna ball rolling (YBR) - a form of exercise that integrates 6 and 10 inch balls. Unlike most ball exercises, the YBR seems to be unique in its ability to focus on your unique needs and target areas, working with your body type to achieve the best results. When you participate in YBR, you are basically getting a hands on practitioner at your service because the workout is geared to stretch out needed muscles. The result for many is better flexibility, elongated muscles, and a leaner figure.

One of the most popular nontraditional exercises, Yoga, originated from India; and, the practice is now common throughout the world. Even though many people today participate in yoga because it is another form of exercise available, yoga is also a form of meditation and it is great for mental health and physical health. Typical yogis today will take a yoga class, which provides students with a set of asanas (poses) that are combined with breathing. Additionally, there are a variety of forms of yoga today that you can participate in, but the most common is typically hatha yoga.

Pilates was developed in Germany and it has become increasingly popular in the United States over the last few years. One of the biggest draws to pilates is that it is based on aerobics and yoga, therefore those who feel that yoga is too calm sometimes prefer pilates. When you attend a pilates class, the exercises focus on your center, or more specifically, your core muscles. Typically, you combine breathing exercises and poses - all at the same time focusing on the core.

Lastly, another form of alternative fitness claiming to reduce stress stems from China and it is called tai chi. Many people today love to participate in tai chi because the environment is very friendly and noncompetitive. During a class, you perform postures and movements at your own pace without taking a breather in between poses. This form of exercise is great for all ages and it is actually recommended by health professionals to decrease your stress, increase your flexibility, improve your strength, increase your energy, and elevate your mood.

Consider trying some of the alternative forms of exercise out there today. Not only will they be less stressful on your body, but they will also provide you with some added health benefits.
