The OneTouch UltraSmart works like many meters. You put a test strip into the meter. The meter will then confirm the code on the testing strip and tell you to test the code number after 25 tests. Once you have confirmed the code, take a blood sample from the tip of your finger and apply it to the end of the test strip until the confirmation window is full. Your results are read in 5 seconds and then they are instantly stored in in the meter iteslf. This means the end of toting around a glucose journal. Your meter does it all instead!

It's more than a meter because it helps you understand your blood glucose results so you can make good decisions to control your diabetes. The OneTouch UltraSmart provides you with nine different charts and graphs to help manage your diabetes.
These charts and graphs include:
- Current verus Average : This info compares your new test result to your 14-day average at that time of day as well in comparison to the last test result taken.
- Logbook: The logbook is a digital version of a normal blood sugar book that documents the date and time of the test with comments on medications, food, health and exercise. You do not need to key in the date and time of your tests, the meter tracks that information immediately. Users will however, need to enter in all information in the comments field.
-Glucose by Meals: This list allows you to look at your results before and after meals, organized by date.
- Graph of Results: This graph allows you to take a look at all your results, organized by day.
-Graph By Time of Day: This graph is interactive and enables you to see and investigate your test results by time of day. For instance, this would let you see all your test results taken at 3 p.m. Over the past 14 days in graph form.
- Average of All Results: This data shows you the number of tests you have completed and the averages of all your testing results over the time you have used the meter.
- Average By Time of Day: This information shows you the quantity of tests you have finished and the averages of all your glucose results by time of day over the period of time you have utilised the meter.
- Glucose Range Information: You may use this information to review the number and percentage of tests, above, inside or below an acceptable blood sugar range.
- Hypo Information: You can use this info to analyze the number o hypoglycemic events around mealtimes and at night.
