What In The World Is Concentrated Fish Oil?

If you're getting keen to take some Omega 3 capsules because you've read so much about their health giving properties then you've probably come across the term concentrated fish oil? But what is concentrated fish oil?

If you were to catch a fish and squeeze it really hard you'd get oil out of it. That oil contains important Omega 3 fatty acids like DHA and EPA, the 2 most important of the health giving Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats. This is called standard food grade fish oil.

But if you put that in to 1000 mg Omega 3 capsules there really wouldn't be enough healthy Omega 3 fats in there.

So what manufacturers do to overcome this is to use a fish oil concentrate. Sometimes it's called super concentrated fish oil, sometimes highly concentrated fish oil, but it's pretty much the same thing.

By concentrating the oil you get more DHA and EPA in a small amount of fish oil. And this is good, so you can use it in small 1000 mg fish oil supplements and deliver enough Omega 3 fats.

When fish oil is concentrated it turns the good fats from a triglyceride form into an ethyl ester form of oil, and this isn't a problem, it's still just as good for you. It is what is known as "bioavailable", meaning if you eat it it can get into your system.

Some manufacturers turn the ethyl ester form back into a triglyceride form believing that if the oil is in the same form as it came out of the fish then it must be more "natural". But the result is that the triglyceride form resulting has a different molecular makeup and isn't nearly as "bioavailable" as the ethyl ester form. But it's still good for you.

One manufacturer has now released a different formulation that includes both concentrated fish oil in it's ethyl ester form and unconcentrated oil in it's natural, not reconverted, triglyceride form.

The results have been impressive with studies showing effectiveness of 2 1/2 times more than "traditional" Omega 3 supplements.

So Omega 3 supplements use concentrated fish oil to deliver more Omega 3 fats. But one uses a mixture of both concentrated and unconcentrated fish oil to result in a more potent blend.
