You Need Omega 3 Fats In Your Diet. But How?
It seems quite clear to me that our diets are too low in Omega 3 fats and that a sufficient supply of Omega 3 fatty acids is essential to our continuing good health. And so for some time I've been taking Omega 3 supplements.
But recently I spoke to a friend about this and he told me he wouldn't take supplements. That supplements are unproven, and not mainstream medicine, and that they weren't something you ought to take. So I thought I'd discuss that.
Because for many people there is a perception that taking supplements is akin to voodoo. No one really knows what's going to happen if you do.
And there is also the perception that taking dietary supplements is somehow alternative. That real people who listen to their doctor wouldnt consider taking dietary supplements including omega 3 dietary supplements.
So lets see if any medical authorities accept dietary supplementation with Omega 3 oils as worthwhile.
The American Heart Association, no less, says that, and I quote,
"Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of " or who have " cardiovascular disease."
They make recommendations for the intake of Omega 3 fats and suggest that we eat at least a 2 servings of fish a week, and other foods high in Omega oils like soybeans and tofu.
And they are quite specific about people with CHD (coronary heart disease). They should eat at least 1 gram of EPA and DHA per day, and for those who need to lower their triglycerides its suggested that they take from 2 to 4 grams of EPA and DHA as capsules, doctor supervised.
So that's pretty clear isn't it. The AHA recommends the intake of a distinct amount of omega 3 fats each day, and recognize the benefits of this for heart health. They also accept the intake of Omega 3 fatty acids by capsule.
Now there's no problem taking more omega 3 fats through the diet, in fact if you can do that then that's ideal. However that isn't so easy for us in some cases. I'll give you can example.
There is omega 3 in something most of us eat every day. Beef and lamb. Well there is if they are grass fed, but as most of the beef and lamb we eat daily is now grain fed there isn't much omega 3 fats in them now.
So getting enough good fats like omega 3 fats through diet alone isn't as easy as you might expect.
And if the American Heart Association is prepared to suggest getting your omega 3 oils through supplements then there's nothing "alternative" about that. So if youve been wondering if you really ought to avoid all these Omega 3 supplements because, well, they arent really mainstream, then listen to the American Heart Association.
